Martin was elected to four different legislative assemblies: Manitoba's, Canada's, British Columbia's (where he was premier for a few months in 1900), and Great Britain's (East St Pancras, 1910 to 1918). As a young adult, he earned the nickname of "Fighting Joe" due to "his quarrelsome nature and his tendency to resort to his fists to settle disputes." It stuck with him until his death.
