Kingsley was a founder and leader of the Socialist Party of Canada. Born in the United States, he had become radicalized following a train accident in Montana in 1890 that resulted in the amputation of both his legs. While recovering in hospital, he read the works of Marx and Engels. Invited by the Nanaimo Socialist Club to speak on a tour of Vancouver Island, he was asked to stay. He was never elected, neither in the United States nor in Canada.
