Canadian senators were initially appointed for life, but the mandatory age of retirement was set to 75 in 1965, although those who were sitting when the rule was changed could choose to retire or not. Well before that, in 1902, Dessaulles was called to the Senate six months before turning 80. He lasted a surprising 23 years, dying in office in 1930, at the age of 102. |
