Rolston was the first woman in Canada to be appointed a cabinet minister with port­folio and the first woman in British Colum­bia to be given a state funeral. MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey, she served as a Con­ser­va­tive, Coalition (Liberal / Conservative), and Social Credit member. As Minister of Education, she introduced a new method of school finance that came to be known as the "Rolston Formula." She was also instrumental in introducing what was effectively a sex-education program into the school curriculum.
