Bruhn's father, Axel Wallgren, was a Crown Reeve in Sweden. Accused of em­bez­zle­ment in 1890, he adopted the surname Bruhn and came to Canada, leaving his family behind. Rolf adopted his father's surname when he joined him in Canada in 1895. He was severely injured in an explosion in 1918, requiring many months of hospitalization and surgeries.
