Well that's interesting!
It shouldn't have needed to be said, but having an affair with the wife of your elec­tion campaign manager is not a good idea. When Thomas Helmbolt (the campaign manager) found letters exchanged between his wife and White­side, he shot "his man" on September 24, 1916, who then died five days later. Helmbolt was charged with murder but was acquitted on grounds of self-defence. That's because, before dying, Whiteside claimed that Helmbolt drew a revolver first, but Helmbolt and his wife testified that Whiteside had brought a revolver and drew first. Note that the principal concerned was unable to defend himself in court.
