Well that's interesting! | |||||
It shouldn't have needed to be said, but having an affair with the wife of your election campaign manager is not a good idea. When Thomas Helmbolt (the campaign manager) found letters exchanged between his wife and Whiteside, he shot "his man" on September 24, 1916, who then died five days later. Helmbolt was charged with murder but was acquitted on grounds of self-defence. That's because, before dying, Whiteside claimed that Helmbolt drew a revolver first, but Helmbolt and his wife testified that Whiteside had brought a revolver and drew first. Note that the principal concerned was unable to defend himself in court. |
