When Jung was first elected as the Progres­sive Con­ser­va­tive MP for Vancouver Centre, he became the first member of a visible minority elected to the Parliament of Canada. He had vowed not to join the Liberal Party of Canada because of its racist legislation in the past against the Chinese.
