Martin, a Conservative, as well as Alexander K. Maclean, the incumbent and Unionist Liberal, won the two Halifax seats by acclamation in the 1917 federal election. The election had been postponed nearly two months in the riding due to the Explosion, and opponents had withdrawn in a show of post-explosion unity.
