The Liberal Emmerson was the 9th Premier of New Brunswick from October 1897 to August 1900, at which time he resigned to be elected the federal MP for West­mor­land. His alcoholism and reputation as a womanizer hampered his career; he was forced to resign from Laurier's cabinet in 1907, after a newspaper reported that he had been thrown out of a Montreal hotel with "two women of ill repute."
