Well that's interesting!
Mitchell, the NDP MP for Vancouver East from 1979 to 1993, was one of the first politicians to raise the issue of violence against women, but when she demanded that the government take action to stop domestic violence, some male MPs in the House laughed. Prior to that, in 1980, after voting against a pay raise for MPs, she donated her additional pay to establish the Margaret Mitchell Fund for Women.
