Lavallée was elected to Quebec's first assembly following Confederation and served four and a half terms, resigning his seat in September 1885 when he was appointed to the legislative council (the provincial equivalent of the Senate), resigning from it in January 1888. Thus, when this conservative died on October 15, 1931, at the age of 92, he was the last survivor of the first assembly, 64 years after his first mandate.
