Shibley was described as "a rather fast gent," who had a mistress with whom he had a girl. They were accused but acquitted of manslaughter of that girl, even though, during the trial, Shibley's mistress testified that he "had been there some ten days before [the child’s death] and had given the child a most unmerciful beating for not saying its prayers, and ordered her to do the same whenever it refused."
