Well that's interesting!
Liberal MP for Victoria (British Columbia) from 1871 to 1874, Nathan was the first Jewish Canadian to be elected to the House of Commons. The second one only came 43 years later when the Montreal Liberal Samuel Jacobs was elected in George-Étienne Cartier in 1917. Although a Liberal, he supported the Conservative government of John A., which strained his relationship with his Victoria co-MP, Amor De Cosmos, whom he called "Cupid" in his private letters. He returned to England, where he was born, in 1876.
