Well that's interesting!
Described by some as a "genial, powerfully built man, over six feet, red, sandy complexion," Schultz claimed to be a physician who had attended Oberlin College, as well as Victoria University in Cobourg, and to have graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston. However, there is no evidence of his having received a medical degree or having been licensed by Victoria University. Lady Aberdeen, wife of the Governor General at the time of his death, recorded during a visit to Winnipeg in 1895 that Schultz and his wife had been "intensely unpopular." Thus, on reading the complimentary description on Schultz’s tombstone, she remarked, "What a pity we knew him."
