Well that's interesting!
Up until the 1930s, members of a legislature who became premier or entered cabinet were required to resign their seats and run in a ministerial by-election. Palmer became the Liberal premier of Prince Edward Island on May 16, 1911, but lost his ministerial by-election, triggering a change of government and hushering the Con­ser­va­tive John Mathieson as premier.
