Loder, a devoted Newfoundland Anglican, sat as a Progressive Conservative MNA from 2007 to 2011. A few years after his defeat, a bishop asked him if he wanted to become a deacon. He had thought about it before, but with the process being shortened from four to two years, this time he agreed. He was ordained on May 15, 2019, at age 66.
