A Liberal, Bjarnason ran four times for a seat in the Saskatchewan legislature, each time against Neil Byers of the NDP. He won the first time in 1964 and the second time in 1967 by only 8 votes, but that win was declared invalid and he lost the resulting 1969 by-election.
