Well that's interesting!
Despite holding his seat since 1972, Clarke is one of the rare Pro­gres­sive Con­ser­va­tives who did not win in that party's landslide victory in 1984. Many doubted that he would succeed, but the then-leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, John Turner, managed to put an end to Clarke's political career. Five unsuccessful re-election bids followed — three for his federal seat and two for a seat in the British Columbia legislature — his last one when he was 79 years old.
