Ferguson was the male child of a set of fraternal triplets along with two sisters. The Ontario New Democrat served in single term during the Rae government, but ended it early to run for mayor of Kitchener — without success. He is said to have struggled with alcoholism in later life, which escalated shortly after the death of his son.
