Well that's interesting!
A federal Liberal minister in the 1960s, Hellyer defected to the Progressive Conservative Party in July 1972, just a few months before that year's general election. More than twenty years after his 1974 electoral defeat as a PC in the Toronto riding of Trinity, after which he was never re-elected, he founded the left-leaning Canadian Action Party in 1997.
