A Conservative anglo-Quebecker, Smith was appointed to the Senate in December 2010. Asked why he accepted the appointment while intending to run for a Commons seat, he drew criticism when he complained that he was taking a "dramatic, catastrophic" pay cut by serving as a senator, at a time when the base salary for a senator was $132,300 — far above the national average. He did run in the 2011 general election, but he lost miserably, his comment during the campaign that "The people are what are important, not the protection of francophones in Québec" probably contributing to his loss. |
