Coles was the first premier of Prince Edward Island. An initial supporter of Con­fed­e­ra­tion as long as it would guarantee the liquidation of leasehold tenure, he turned against it after the 1864 Québec conference when the Canadians answered that the Islanders were already promised more than their fair share of financial subsidies. Coles is said to have been hit with early senility in his third term as premier and chose to resign in August 1868. Historians today are divided as to whether he had become senile, insane, or simply depressed.
