Smith was the husband of the prominent Manitoba NDP minister from 1981 to 1988, Muriel Smith. When he ran in the riding of River Heights in the 1986 general election, an article in the 17 March 1986 issue of the Winnipeg Free Press described him as a retired teacher, aged 55, and "Mr. Muriel Smith." He was defeated by the Liberal leader, Sharon Carstairs. In the next general election two years later, it was Muriel's turn to be defeated in the neighbouring riding of Osborne by another rising Liberal, Reg Alcock. |
