Born in Montreal, Meighen, the grandson of former prime minister Arthur Meighen and a friend and advisor of Brian Mulroney, ran twice for a seat in Parliament in the early 1970s, but failed. Mulroney thus appointed him to the Senate in September 1990, where he served until 2012. In 2005, he was the only Conservative senator to vote in favour of same-sex marriage. |
