Sweigard became the leader of the Social Credit Party of Canada in 1983, after Martin Hattersley had resigned over the party's decision to reinstate James Keegstra. For his part, Sweigard, a Pentecostal preacher, referred to Keegstra as a "fine Christian gentleman."
