Well that's interesting!
When he died on November 6, 1935, at the age of 90, Schmidt was the last survivor of the first Manitoba assembly which was held from late 1870 to late 1874. Serving two non-consecutive terms, he had chosen not to run in the 1879 general election when the province's assembly had become fully partisan, and established himself in Saskatchewan (then still the North-Western Territories). He therefore lived almost 56 years after his departure from politics, or almost 65 years after the start of his first mandate.
