Stenhouse resigned his seat in the British Columbia legislature when he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1887. Although he remained a bachelor, he vigorously defended the right of Mormons to practise polygamy. But he returned to his native Britain in 1891, apparently abandoning the Mormon faith.
