Well that's interesting!
Tolmie, father of Simon who was premier of British Columbia from 1928 to 1933, was himself an MLA from 1874 to 1878. But well before that, as a young scientist, he wanted to improve the area's relationship with the native Indians and couldn't agree with the prevailing point of view to convert them to Christianity. As a result of this crisis of conscience, he took a leave of absence to further his studies in Europe.
