Well that's interesting!
Born in Vermont, Calvin, who had become a naturalized British citizen in 1845, is said to have never considered himself a Canadian as much as an American doing business in Canada. That said, on one occasion, he was recorded as having told John A. Macdonald, "I can holler for the Queen as loud as you can."
