Elected as the Progressive Conservative MPP for Rainy River in the 1985 Ontario general election, Pierce criticized what he called the "local Indians" for expecting more "giveaways and handouts," thus refusing to campaign on reserves. Even some Conservatives believed that his stance was too far to the right.
