Well that's interesting!
Johnston decided to retire from politics prior to the 1990 Ontario general election, thus missing out on being part of the province's first (and so far only) NDP government. However, when he announced his retirement, he said that after suffering a heart attack in 1984, he wanted to pursue a career that was easier on his health. He and his wife went on to operate a vineyard and winery in Prince Edward County.
