Well that's interesting!
In the 1953 Nova Scotia general election, Reid, a Liberal, won in Hants East against the Progressive Conservative incumbent, Ernest Ettinger, by only one vote. Ettinger appealed and the election was voided in February 1954. The by-election that followed in May ended in a tie between Reid and Ettinger, which the returning officer broke by casting the deciding vote for Reid. However, less than 11 months later, Reid died in office. The seat remained vacant until the 1956 general election, and Ettinger won it back by only 50 votes against the Liberal, Arthur MacKenzie. Two years after his re-election in 1960, Ettinger also died in office, and his son Albert replaced him following a September 1962 by-election.
