MacLeod was the political nemesis of John W. MacDonald in the Nova Scotia riding of Pictou East. The two men ran for the seat four times, each time against each other. MacLeod, the Progressive Conservative, won once in 1956, and MacDonald, the Liberal, won the other three times (1949, 1953, 1960).
