Well that's interesting!
A former Newfoundland Liberal MHA, Vardy was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of the public trust in 1973, and fled to Panama City. He was captured there in 1974, but he escaped in Florida while being brought back to Canada, and was able to successfully fight his extradition until his death in 1980.
