Today’s parliamentarians by social generations

The Generation X cohort is by far the most present in the Canadian legislatures in 2026, while Boomers and Millennials are just about evenly represented. Given that the youngest person from the Silent Generation is turning 81 in 2026, it is fair to expect that their columns will disappear soon from the inter­active table below. Keep an eye on Raymond Cho in Ontario, and Hedy Fry, Louis Plamondon and Judy Sgro federally, who respectively have turned or will be turning 90, 85, 83 and 82 this year.

This is a period where there are five generations sitting in the Canadian legislatures: Silent, Boomers, Gen-X, Mil­len­nial (Y) and Zoomers (Z).

• It is quite likely that from the late 2020s to the mid 2030s, there will only be four generations in the legislatures, as those from the Silent Generation will likely have retired by then, leaving only Boomers, X, Y and Z. The youngest Boomers will be 69 in 2033, so several of them are likely to continue sitting for a while longer.
   
• A person from Generation Alpha could be elected as early as 2031, but that will likely only occur a few years later given how it took a Zoomer nearly two years to be elected after 2015, and that was unusually quick thanks to Sam Oosterhoff. But when it happens, there would again be five generations in the legislatures: Boomers, X, Y, Z and Alpha.
   
• The earliest a person from Generation Beta could be elected is 2043, at which point the youngest Boomers would be turning 79. Even if it took four years for the first Beta to be elected, the youngest Boomers would be 83 at that point. So looking at the situation in 2026, we could wit­ness a brief period around 2047 that would set a precedent, in that there would be six generations sitting in the Canadian legislatures: Boomers, X, Y, Z, Alpha, Zoomers and Beta.
