Well that's interesting!
Chumir, an Alberta Liberal, died in 1992, nearly three years into his second term as the MLA for Calgary-Buffalo. The obituary in the Calgary Herald for the politician and human rights advocate described him as a "soft-spoken man with a quirky sense of humour [who] was a determined champion of public education and individual freedoms." Having no close kin, he had set up his estate to establish the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics Leadership.
