by Maurice Y. Michaud (he/him)
So far, there have been 43 general elections in British Columbia from 1871 to 2024. Remember that a non-partisan form of government was operated in British Columbia until 1903. As a result, the summaries presented here for the elections prior to 1903 are of limited to no value compared to the detailed results for those elections. Ironically, although this jurisdiction started off as non-partisan, it has since had the most complex partisan landscape of any jurisdiction in Canada.
By default, these summaries are presented in descending chronological order. For you convenience, this sorter allows you to reverse the chronology.

Although political parties in British Columbia were only formalized by the 1903 election, they started to appear during this election.
In this form of non-partisan government, members would align themselves or not with the head of governement and that could change several times in the course of an assembly. Because candidates were essentially considered “free agents” (or independents) during the election campaign and those running as Opposition often would win and thus would become the Government while those who ran as straight Independents were sometimes described as Government supporters, this table merely reflects the results of the general election, not the composition of the House. !!! 20 (52.63%)
