Difference since the previous general election: +10 seats
Although the Conservatives won a plurality of seats and the popular vote, the incumbent Liberal Party formed government with the help of the Progressive Party. When that alliance disintegrated in June 1926, Prime Minister King asked the governor general, Lord Byng, to dissolve parliament and call an election. Byng refused, triggering what became known as the Byng-King Affair. Power was given to the Conservative Party, which formed the shortest-lived government in Canadian history.

Difference since the previous general election: +14 seats
For this wartime election, the Conservative ran under the banner of "Government (Unionist)" while the Liberals ran as "Opposition (Laurier Liberals)." By the time Robert L. Borden resigned as prime minister on 9 July 1920, these parties had reverted to their usual names. One Québec Liberal member, Rodolphe Lemieux, occupied two seats (Gaspé and Maisonneuve).

Only 180 seats nationwide were filled because the election in Kamouraska [QC] was cancelled due to irregularities by the returning officer and that seat remained vacant until a by-election held on 17 February 1869; however, the result of that by-election is counted as if the initial election had not been cancelled. By the end of 1871, with the entry of Manitoba and British Columbia into Confederation, there were 192 seats (it should have been 191 but a tie in Marquette [MB] led to both winners getting a seat).

LIB By acclamation: 16
ANTI By acclamation: 4. Although it was the equivalent of the Liberal Party in Nova Scotia for this election, it is presented separately here because not all members joined the Liberals after its dissolution.
