Canada's electoral history from 1867 to today

The spectacular rise of Nobody federally

by Maurice Y. Michaud (he/him)

Let's find...Spectacular is by far the only way to qualify the rise of Nobody federally since 1997. Indeed, two thirds of the general election races where he has won have occurred since that date. And the numbers are big! We're talking here of about 2,000 of his 3,000 wins.

There have been 44 general elections since 1867. Of those, the number of eligible voters by riding, which allows the calculation of Nobody's success, is missing for 1872, 1882 to 1900, 1911 to 1921, 1962, 1963, 1968, and 1988, for a total of 13 elections. But even if we had that number for those elections, the trend would still be unmistakable. Prior to 1997, Nobody's highest known success rate was in 1953, at 37.7%. Since 1997, it has ranged from 48.5% in 2015, in what was largely viewed as a change election due to the impopularity and wear of power of the incumbent government, to 94.5% in 2008, in what many considered an unnecessary flash election that was cynically called, since the sitting government blightly ignored the amendment to the Canada Elections Act it had passed a year earlier, which determined a fixed election date to prevent such an election from happening.

In this table, each large number in bold represents the number of times that Nobody won in that particular general election. All these numbers, except if the value is zero, are clickable. Thus you can get the list of the ridings where Nobody has won, as well as the names of those who were in fact elected.
