The oldest persons at the time of their (re)-election

by Maurice Y. Michaud (he/him)

Among the 56 oldest persons at the time of their election, 11 (or 19.64%) are in office, including this category's laureate: Ontario Progressive Conservative Raymond Cho, at 88 years and 3 months on February 27, 2025. He is also be the oldest on first election, as he was 79 years old when he was first elected in a by-election in Scarborough—Rouge River in September 2016, the dozen or so others in this database having been re-elected at that age. That being said, Cho had been a Toronto city councillor since 1991.

We notice a former prime minister on this list, namely John Diefenbaker, re-elected in 1979 at the age of 83 but dying a few months later. We notice as well a husband and wife team: George and Martha Black. George suffered a nervous breakdown toward the end of the 17th Parliament. Martha won his Yukon seat for him, occupying it for only one term until George returned to it from 1940 to 1949.
