Well that's interesting! | |||||
Haynes was refused when he tried to enlist in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, but after he wrote in protest to officials in Ottawa, including the Minister of National Defence for Naval Services, Angus L. Macdonald, he became the first Black person in the modern navy. He was defeated as a Manitoba Liberal in 1977 and as a candidate for Winnipeg city council in 1980. |
