Have you ever wondered how many people have been elected to Parliament or the legislative assemblies since Confederation? Well, maybe you haven’t, but I have! And it’s 14,448 persons — 13,025 men, 1,417 women, and 6 persons identifying as non-binary. Among them, 4,612 are (or are believed to be) still alive: 3,411 men, 1,195 women, and all the non-binary individuals.
Although they are not legion, some people never sat in the legislature to which they were elected. A few examples:
Percival Baker (1867–1921) was the elected United Farmers of Alberta candidate in Ponoka in the 1921 general election, but he had had an accident while chopping down trees on his farm three weeks prior to the election and he died the day after his election.
