Canada's electoral history from 1867 to today

Today's governments and official oppositions

by Maurice Y. Michaud (he/him)

CanadaHere is how each legislative assembly is constituted in terms of government and opposition. If all the seats in a legislature are shown as vacant, that means that a general election is currently being held.

On this 25th day of April of the year 2024, a total of 1,101 members are sitting at both the federal and provincial or territorial levels — 720 men, 377 women, and 4 persons identifying as non binary — and 9 seats are vacant. Among those sitting members:

  • 631 are on the government side — 414 men, 216 women, and 1 person identifying as non binary,
  • 27 are part of a confidence-and-supply agreement — 13 men, 13 women, one person identifying as non-binary,
  • and 443 are on the opposition side — 293 men, 148 women, and 2 persons identifying as non binary.
The status of the current governments within the 12 partisan assemblies is as follows:
  • 10 majorities
  • 2 majorities thanks to a confidence-and-supply agreement
In non-partisan assemblies, the individuals named in the ministerial cabinet are de facto considered forming the government
