Today’s governments and official oppositions

by Maurice Y. Michaud (he/him)

Nova ScotiaHere is how each legislative assembly is constituted in terms of government and opposition. If all the seats in a legislature are shown as vacant, that means that a general election is currently being held.

On this 19th day of April of the year 2025, a total of 771 members are sitting at both the federal and provincial or territorial levels — 471 men, 295 women, and 5 persons identifying as non binary — and 350 seats are vacant. Among those sitting members:

  • 467 are on the government side — 299 men, 167 women, and 1 person identifying as non binary,
  • 3 are part of a confidence-and-supply agreement — 2 women, one person identifying as non-binary,
  • and 301 are on the opposition side — 172 men, 126 women, and 3 persons identifying as non binary.
The status of the current governments within the 12 partisan assemblies is as follows:
  • 10 majorities
  • 1 in the midst of a general election
  • 1 majority thanks to a confidence-and-supply agreement
In non-partisan assemblies, the individuals named in the ministerial cabinet are de facto considered forming the government
